Ok, this one has been done before, 100%.
I'm willing to bet on that.
However.
I've never been the one who wrote the blog. And here I am. The Phenomenal Phoenix with another banger blog post.
Forgive me but this post might be a bit all over the place. I'm not actually that good at writing blogs, and it's been a few years since my last school essay so if things don't flow together just pretend that they do. This is more of a stream of thoughts from my freaky and weird brain >:3
Have you ever heard the quote "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic?". I can never remember who said it, but they're right. If you showed any of what we have today to a medieval peasant, you'd promptly get burned at the stake.
I love witches in media.
Actually, it's more like "like". Off the top of my head I can only name Hades II and the book I just read- 'Wyrd Sisters' by Terry Pratchett.
I don't feel as if I'm able to claim a 'love' for a subject if I can't riff a bunch of random trivia about it off of the top of my head. But moreso it's the fact that I don't go out of my way to search for things containing witches, and I'd be wholly unable to tell you the good the bad and the ugly.
What I'm really talking about, is the idea of a small group or community of people, all united by their skill or greater understanding of something niche, yet affects everybody. A coven basically. Or a Hackerspace.
What I love is community, and intelligent individuals.
Hackers are motivated primarily by curiosity. Secondarily, the desire to aid their community.
Hackers hate corps. They desire to figure out the inner workings of systems - technological or otherwise - and then mess around or update them.
In the stories I like to read, the ones with witches, they're always messing around with things; just like hackers. Although sometimes they're not supposed to meddle, yet do anyway, because "Some rules are just stupid".
Point to a random piece of tech in your room. A TV for instance.
How does it work?
Go on, tell me how. Electricity comes in from the wall, and somehow, in some way, it displays shapes and colours and makes sound in an exact and precise fashion.
You can't?
And how does magic work? Tell me how a wizard is able to wave his wrinkly old hands around in the air, and from that a fireball appears. Where/what's the fuel? Where did the heat originate?
There we go. Further evidence that hackers and techies are like witches and wizards. No regular person is able to explain how it works.
There are even runes involved. Computer chips are made by engraving silicon using a high powered laser.
Now obviously TVs and fireballs are hugely different. For one, TVs are real and we as a society do know how they work and how to create them. But if we lived in a world with magic, we'd be saying that TVs are crazy, and the arch mages of the kingdom know all there could possibly be when it comes to fireball incantations.
While real world magic might not be fireballs and blood pacts, it's comparable enough to feel really really cool while you're working away at making any kind of technical project. Isn't that amazing?!
Each persons blog is their own little pocket dimension they get to decorate, their homelab a wizards tower. An RSS reader can become an orb of scrying.
I could draw more comparisons, but I won't.
Now it's your turn!
star You have homework! star
I'd like you to take a breather from the net- look around meatspace, the real world - grab some paper, a pen and make your own list of comparisons between what you have in your little den, and what a wizard would have.
Thanks for reading! Have fun with your assignment, and remember that love wins. Always ;)
