Recently, I've modified my Linux desktop! I use arch btw
Can you believe it? I've been talking about doing this since... well before covid I think. When I first had dreams of being a full time Linux user.
3-4 Years ago I started using linux on my laptop, 1 year ago I ditched Win10 on my PC. Now I am using a semi-custom setup on my PC!
It was a lot easier than I thought it would be. I mean, really, all I had to do was fiddle with the hex codes in some config files. (I had already stolen the dotfiles of someone else's rice from a YouTube video you can see here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZDPXFQYz0Q). And you can find the Dotfiles used in the video here: https://ml4w.com, since I don't believe that they were referenced in the description. Note: this site and the dotfiles have been updated since my installation, so you're experience may differ.
There is still more to do though!
Although (almost) everything is now in 'my' colour scheme of d#ark blue and silver/chrome/grey, some things need further modification.
For example, somehow, there is now flavour text at the bottom of my desktop. Maybe this comes from Hyprpaper, which previously was not working because an update broke it.
I was going to say that my tray with some application icons (tbh I have no idea why only Discord and Steam show up there) wasn't working, but it is now. Must've been when I was reloading waybar to test some new looks that hid them.
Also, all my apps that use GTK4.0+ aren't any different. They're stuck with light theme for now. Apparently changing the theme of those is quite difficult, so that will be another challenge for me to tackle.
Lastly, my wallpaper does not fit the overall colour scheme of things, but that's alright.
I completely forgot about updating my login manager, which is still the default SDDM. I'm not too bothered about it though, as I spend near to 0% of my time on the computer looking at my login screen.
There is also an application I've heard of called 'EWW' which let's you craft custom widgets, such as a quick launch / power menu for frequently used apps.
I'm also not too happy with the app launcher that I have at the moment either. It's a really minimalistic list of app names. So I might uninstall it and swap it out for something new.
Fastfetch might need to be updated too.
One of the biggest things I want to do though, is find out how to get a theme switcher so I can change what colour scheme I'm using for all my apps.
I do think that those already exist, and I'd just need to download it and feed it all the config files I want.
When you think about it, it's quite a huge undertaking. Modifying the config file of your terminal, app launcher, wallpaper, and task bar while retaining their previous states and not permanently overwriting anything.
What's more likely to happen next though, is that I make another rice, entirely from scratch.
Yep.
Just changing hex codes isn't enough for me. Big surprise there. No. I'm going to take to my Laptop, and just nuke all the existing config files. Everything I have that was premade for me. Then I'm going to build it back up.
I'll probably go for a red and black theme. Arasaka counter-intelligence. Then I can figure out how to get theme switching to work by taking those files and merging them with my PC.
It should work as long as my apps are the same. In theory.
